Overview

The Tac-Strap is a reversible dive mask strap sleeve that creates a comfortable but secure diving or snorkeling experience for the user. The textured neoprene on one side keeps the strap in place on the head without pulling hair. The padding it provides also minimizes fatigue on longer dives.

The Origin Story

If you've ever worn a diving mask, you've probably at least once struggled to get it to fit comfortably and maybe even pulled out a few hairs in the process. If you're snorkeling briefly on a vacation this might not be that big of a problem for you, but if you're diving for extended periods of time this annoyance can get frustrating. Divers have solved this problem with smooth neoprene sleeves that go over the straps. However, these remove nearly all of the friction from the straps and make the strap more likely to slip off your head or around your ears. After experiencing this myself on many dives, I set out to improve the mask strap.

From my work on the Dive Mount, I had some extra textured neoprene on hand. With some quick testing, this material seemed to be a great combination of comfort and grip. I had never used a sewing machine before, but I quickly taught myself the basics and began making prototypes. After some pool tests, I decided my design was ready for production. I found a manufacturer abroad to produce a large batch, and I listed the newly created "Tac-Strap" on Amazon.

The Outcome

I continue to sell the Tac-Strap under my outdoor gear brand OUTMōRE. This product was a strategic choice to expand my diving product selection and my first foray into soft goods. I learned a lot about sewing and working with international partners for soft good manufacturing through the process of bringing this to market.
